Boss Whistle
The Coal Miners of Vancouver Island Remember Lynne Bowen
Since coal was first reported on Vancouver Island in 1835 by First Nations people, thousands of miners have come to communities like Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Cumberland. A few prospered, but most did not. Hundreds perished in explosions, cave ins and floods. Even a two year strike failed to win the miners a union. Through this and many other strikes, the miners and their families held on. Six weeks before the institution of their union, the largest mine shut down. The last generation of miners is now gone, but their story yet lives.
