Margaret Manual

This delightful baby book is filled with images of baby eating, sleeping, playing and doing other antics. A blank line appears under each English caption so parents may write the word in their own language. This book will help parents educate their babies in their formative years.

To help parents use this book, an example of an Okanagan word appears on a blank line on the first page spread. Other pages each have a blank line for missing words, and parents can write the appropriate word on each line. To help learners of Okanagan and Cree, Theytus Books will post a downloadable PDF with the Okanagan and Cree words that correspond to the English captions in the book. In the future, words from other First Nations languages will be added to the PDF.

About the Author:

Margaret Manuel was born in Kamloops, BC and was raised in Merritt, BC. She is of Okanagan and Shuswap ancestry. She comes from a family of traditional knowledge keepers. From an early age she was taught to remember who she is and where she comes from. Along with her siblings she was taught the Okanagan language; while she is stil not fluent, she continues to struggle with her grasp of the language her people speak. It is with this fight to retain the little that she knows and her willingness to keep the flame burning that she continues her journey toward fluency in her native tongue. Being a mother of two, she also thrives to teach and encourage her children to follow in her footsteps.
